The Premiere

Step inside the screen and fight through every genre to save the girl in the final act.

The Premiere

The Premiere is the story-driven campaign of Viewtiful Joe, Capcom's 2003 GameCube action title directed by Hideki Kamiya. In it, you control Joe, an ordinary movie-loving young man who is granted extraordinary VFX powers and thrust into a living world of cinema to rescue Milla from an unseen threat. The campaign is structured as a series of movie-genre-themed stages—action, horror, musical, and others—each played as if Joe is stepping inside a film. Progression is gated by story beats and boss encounters, and the whole arc is framed as a single cinematic 'premiere' that Joe must see through to its final reel.

Lore & Background

In the world of Viewtiful Joe, the boundary between a viewer and the film has collapsed. Joe, a devoted cinephile, is pulled into a dimension where movies are living, breathing realities. There he meets Milla, a young woman whose life is in danger from a shadowy antagonistic force that feeds on the narrative itself. Joe is bestowed a set of VFX abilities—most notably Slow and Zoom—that let him manipulate time and perspective mid-combat, turning him into something like a living special-effects operator inside the picture. Each stage in The Premiere is built around a specific film genre, and the visual language shifts accordingly: saturated color palettes for musical numbers, desaturated dread for horror sequences, and high-contrast action choreography for the blockbuster stages. The staging is deliberately theatrical, with cutscenes that mimic camera angles, lens flares, and title-card transitions, reinforcing the idea that the player is watching (and now performing in) a movie. The campaign's emotional core is Joe's determination to reach Milla before the story is 'cut' and she is lost to the frame. Every genre stage is a new act in that single, escalating film, and the final confrontation is presented as the climax of the premiere itself.

In Their Own Story

The marquee flickers on. Joe stands in the aisle of a darkened theatre, the smell of warm popcorn and old carpet under his feet. The screen ahead is black, then white, then a title he can't quite read. The lights dim further. Milla's face appears on the screen—smiling, waving, reaching a hand toward the audience. Then the screen shatters inward, not outward, and Joe is falling through the frame into a world made of celluloid and light. A slow-motion bullet hangs in the air before him. He taps the VFX button in his mind, and the world stretches. He runs. The premiere has begun, and the audience is only him.

Reader's Guide

The Premiere is the full story campaign of Viewtiful Joe. Joe, an ordinary young man with a love of cinema, is saved by Milla and granted VFX powers that let him alter the flow of combat—slowing time, zooming into a target, and performing genre-specific moves. He must now travel through a series of movie-themed stages to reach her before an antagonistic force erases her from the story. Each stage is built around a different film genre. The player fights through waves of enemies, solves light platforming challenges, and faces a boss at the end of each act. The campaign's pacing is relentless: one moment you're dodging bullets in a noir alley, the next you're tap-dancing through a musical number while kicking goons in the face. Every stage is a new reel, and every boss is a showdown that tests your mastery of the VFX system. To survive, you'll need to learn enemy patterns, chain combos, and use Slow and Zoom not just as attacks but as tools to manipulate the very fabric of the movie around you.
